Cannabis Compounds & Effects

Cannabis and Cannabidiol (CBD) in Alabama (5 August 2017)
Alabama has some of the harshest marijuana laws in the United States. Getting caught with any amount of cannabis can result in going to jail for up to 20 years. Alabama State Government has shown little support for the legalization of marijuana in any form.
Medical Cannabis in Alabama
Full strength medical (THC) cannabis is illegal in Alabama. In 2014, Governor Robert Bentley signed Senate Bill 174, Carly’s Law, which made it legal for seizure patients with a prescription to possess and use high-CBD Oil with low amounts of THC.
In 2016, the Medical Marijuana Patient Safe Access Act, which could legalize low-THC cannabis for a wider range of ailments, was presented to Alabama lawmakers. Currently the bill remains in the Senate County and Municipal Government Committee. If it progresses through the state’s legislature and ends up being passed, it would legalize cannabidiol from marijuana however medical cannabis (high in CBD and THC) would still remain illegal in Alabama.
CBD from Hemp Oil in Alabama
As mentioned, the possession and consumption of CBD oil is legal for qualified patients under Carly’s Law. CBD oil that is derived from hemp is considered a dietary supplement and legal to import and sell in all 50 U.S. states, including Alabama.
In March 2014, the state Senate approved a bill that authorized the University of Alabama to study the use of marijuana-derived oil for the treatment of seizures, and they would be able to prescribe the oil to approved patients. The study’s early results, published in March 2016, show that 50% of 51 subjects saw sustained improvement in seizure control, and 32 to 45 percent experienced declines in seizures, while two patients were seizure-free following treatment.
Recreational Cannabis in Alabama
Alabama remains one of the most conservative states in the US on marijuana law. Smoking or possessing any amount of recreational marijuana can land you in jail. First time offenders can face a misdemeanor charge punishable to a 1-year jail term and a fine of $6,000. In some cases the jail term may be suspended with probation. Repeat offenders are charged with a Class C felony that is can get up to 1 to 10 years of jail time and a $15,000 fine. The sale of recreational (high THC) marijuana, even in trace amounts, is a Class B felony and can get a 2 to 20 years prison sentence with a $30,000 fine. Selling marijuana to minors can lead to life imprisonment!
Cultivation of Cannabis in Alabama
The cultivation of cannabis for ANY purpose is currently illegal in Alabama. Growing cannabis or any of its derivatives on your personal property can result in a trafficking felony punishable by a minimum 3 years imprisonment and a $25,000 fine.
Birmingham Alabama
In 2010 the population of Birmingham Alabama was 212,237. The city is the county seat of Jefferson County. In 2010 the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area had a population of about 1,128,047, around a quarter of the total population of Alabama.
The Birmingham area occupies Jones Valley alongside long mountain ridges which are the end of the Appalachian foothills. The valley is drained by Village Creek and Valley Creek which flow into the Black Warrior River. A railway ran through the where most of the early manufacturing operations began. South of downtown is Red Mountain.
The Over the Mountain area which includes Shades Valley, Shades Mountain and beyond, was shielded from the industrial smoke and rough streets of the city in the early industrial days. This is now the setting for the affluent Birmingham suburbs including Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, and Hoover. Cahaba River basin is south of Shades Valley and represents one of the most diverse river ecosystems in the USA. To the north Sand Mountain flanks the city and divides Jones Valley from the more rugged land to the north.
One of the USA’s largest urban nature reserves, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, is located due east of the heart of the city.
